That question comes up occasionally, so I'm glad you asked.

The answer is, "I don't know." I don't know their business model, tax situation, advertising expenses, staffing needs, or any of their other costs of doing business.

With me, it's just me. I do all my own planning, paperwork and equipment hauling, and I keep a lid on when and where I place my advertising dollars.

Then there's the idea of "perceived quality". Some companies take the chance that certain clients will be willing to pay more if they believe they're getting a better product - or a better overall experience. But in our line of work, what are the tangibles that you're paying for? Music, a sound system, perhaps lights, and a professional presentation. You get all that when you hire me - and you'll likely be paying less in the process.

So, it's really more like comparing apples to apples. Are you okay with paying more for your apples at Draeger's or Whole Foods? Sure, it's a nice experience. But so is going to the farmer's market, where your money goes directly to that nice man from Watsonville with the 14 different varieties and that pleasant personal service.

Homecoming 2011

During the 2010-2011 school year, San Ramon Valley High School celebrated its 100th anniversary. That's right - this local institution first started way back in 1910!

This year's homecoming celebrations are scheduled for the weekend of October 21-23, and I'm going to be supplying some musical memories for 2 different reunions happening that weekend. First up, I'll be at the outdoor picnic being organized by the Class of 1971. This is happening at Hap Magee Ranch Park in Danville on Saturday afternoon. That evening, I'll be at the indoor party being organized by the Class of 1986, at the Community Center in San Ramon's Central Park.

I've really been enjoying reviewing and enlarging my song collection for the years 1968-1972 and also for the years 1983-1987. I figure these years would cover most attendees' freshman-senior terms, plus perhaps their first year at college. It would also include the years that spouses, friends or other additional guests may have been in school.

So if you're one of the people planning on being there, and there's something particular that you'd like to make sure you hear, add a comment to this post. Or you can leave a comment at my Facebook page. But even if you don't, you can be sure I'll have all (well, most) of your favorites with me at your reunion! See you there!

"Top Songs" charts!

Now, when you go to our Facebook page, you can find an application that allows you to look at the Top Songs charts for various categories. Once at the page, look in the left margin for the light bulb. One click, and you're there!

These charts are compiled and updated regularly by a website called DJ Intellegence, based on customer requests and input. There are charts for the top songs from each of the past several decades (including the 00's), plus top wedding songs, overall most requested, and so on.

Since the charts are refreshed so often, we hope you'll go to our page frequently and view them. And if you're planning an event, seeing the songs listed there might just trigger your "aha moment" when selecting your music.

July 14 and August 11 ~ Danville Thursday Night Street Festivals

Join me on upcoming Thursday evenings between 5:30 and 8:30 pm for some dancing in the street (and eating, and drinking, and playing...)!

On July 14, I'll be set up on East Prospect Ave. (near That Bar and Danville Chocolates) playing a potent mix of your favorite summer songs. On following weeks I may be set up at different locations, but I'll still be somewhere downtown ~ just listen for the "Original" music (as opposed to the cover versions being performed by the various live bands).

The 7/14 and 8/11 events will also feature Bistro Dining in the street (with 5 distinct courtyards presented by local restaurants), Wine & Beer Gardens (showcasing local varieties), a Kids Zone (with bouncy house, SRV Museum train and children's vendors), and 2 exhibition areas. You'll also be able to shop right there in the street, with local vendors selling the best of what Danville has to offer! On July 21 and August 18, I'll be set up along the fringes of Hartz Ave. during the massively-popular Hot Summer Nights classic car show. Get ready for a sock hop! Thursday nights are ROCKIN' in downtown Danville this summer!

Events with Unique Themes

My previous post was about the Danville Fine Arts Faire. For this event, a handful of live musicians were hired to perform their own take on "world" music, lending to the artsy atmosphere along Hartz Avenue.

Along Prospect Avenue, where I was to be set up, there was Italian street painting (chalk artists), and at my end of the street, the organizers told me they wanted to create an atmosphere of being on the French Riviera. So in relatively short order, I was able to put together 5 hours of appropriate music ~ most of it already in my collection!

In several weeks, I've been asked to provide music for an event that's going to have a hodgepodge of activities (including some South American dancing?), and my job is to have some music with a western/cowboy theme. I wish you could hear some of the surprises I have in the nearly 2 hours of songs I've already compiled! Of course, there will be the stuff you expect, like Roy Rogers, Marty Robbins and Gene Autry, but my playlist will feature much deeper cuts than those.

Next weekend, I'm on tap once again to be the DJ for our homeowner's association's annual July 4 barbecue and pool party. In addition to the standard summer & party songs I'll be playing, I have literally hours of music appropriate for a patriotic setting - and not just marches, country songs about soldiers and flags, and 6 different versions of the National Anthem. So if you're aware of any political rallies, conventions, 9/12 gatherings or tea parties coming up, I'm the man you'll want to have there.

My point is, when I say "I've already got your soundtrack" and that I have "The right music for ANY occasion", I mean it. So plan something - think outside the box. Throw an idea at me. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the depth and breadth of what I come up with!

Father's Day ~ Danville Fine Arts Faire 2011

Not your average auto show...

Sport, luxury and exotic autos will be on glorious display this Saturday at the Blackhawk Plaza in Danville. "Autos On The Plaza" is another free preview event sponsored by Mogulaire Concours d'Elegance. Why a preview event? To boost the excitement level for the main event this July at Wente Vineyards, of course!

I'm a mobile DJ. What does that mean?

In it's most basic definition, being a mobile DJ means that I bring ALL of my music to YOUR location. Hiring me will sort of be like having a dozen different radio stations at your event, ready to play whatever you want. Or similarly, it will sort of be like having a jukebox with more than 11,000 of the most popular songs in all of the most popular genres - plus several songs you might least be expecting.

I'm not a radio DJ. I'm not a club DJ. If you want beat matching, continuous mixes, scratching, house/dub/trance music, etc. - then go to a club. Or hire a 20-something DJ that does that sort of thing.

Perhaps you've heard it said that a good DJ is going to be good at "reading the room", or knowing what to play and when to play it. That's true. A good DJ will be able to customize a soundtrack that provides for continuous dancing and casual listening with enough insight to choose music that attracts and engages the audience.

These days, anyone can take a picture or shoot a video and post it to Facebook or You Tube, but a photographer or videographer brings skill, experience and an artistic eye to the process.

Also these days, anyone can download a few songs from iTunes, create a playlist, send it through a speaker, and call it a party. But only a DJ with a vast repitoire and background can provide just the right song at just the right moment. A good DJ will already have the songs that you might not have thought of for that little playlist. He will have crafted an ideal soundtrack for your specific event.

So why would you hire a DJ rather than live musicians? I have friends who make their living from being a live musician! Heck, I even am a musician! So why am I doing this? Because I love music - all of it. Stuff from the early 20th century up to today's latest hits. I have a familiarity with all of it, and I bring a representative sample of all of it with me when I DJ an event. A live band might know alot of songs, but how is that defined? 200? 500?

Some guy in his 20s or 30s might have a large music collection, or great mixing skills, but does he have musical training or a sense of history? I'm not merely a purveyor of other people's art. I don't merely throw together a collection of songs that an otherwise disparate group of original artists has created.

Here's what I bring to the equation: The ear of a trained musician. I'm someone who has experience in musical composition, theory, production, arranging, and history. I have experience in both vocal and instrumental performance.

You're not going to merely get the songs from the last 5-10 years at one of my events, nor just the top 5-10 most popular songs from the decades preceding that. You're going to get a comprehensive set of songs from someone who's been listening to all types of music for many years - someone who was actually alive at certain pivotal moments in the chronology of popular music (or who at least has a sense of the historical context of those moments).

The RIGHT music for ANY occasion.

The Great Cake Debate

I just read this elsewhere and liked it, so I'm taking the liberty of re-posting it here:

If I've heard it once, I've heard it a thousand times: The oft-repeated myth that if you cut your cake early, people will think the reception is over, and leave. Here, once and for all is my simplest response...

The only time people will leave your wedding is because there is no compelling reason for them to stay. Keep it moving, make it fun, and only a sad few will ever even look at their watch. I promise.

So, let's heap some loving kindness on the unfortunate few who simply cannot stay, either because of cranky children, cranky spouses or some other cruel twist of fate. If the cake is the magical signal that it's okay to leave, then by all means, give it to them in a timely and carefully-chosen way. It seems so much more compassionate than holding people dessert-hostage.

Cutting the cake early has scores of other benefits, not the least of which is the advantage of getting those traditional cake-cutting photos before the bride gets all sweaty on the dance floor (it's gonna happen). And when done right, the cake-cutting draws guests out of their seats without really asking, so you have the added benefit of friends and family right there with you, making you laugh, egging you on, and making the perfect backdrop for those photos, and then the first dance photos - and it just FEELS better having the people you love up on their feet and sharing the moment. Who in their right mind would leave THAT?

Remember those people that had to leave right after the cake? Well, when the First Dance followed right after the groom's heartfelt Thank You, they didn't want to miss it. And the Father-Daughter dance was sweet and brief, and flowed so perfectly into the Mother-Son song, well... they stayed for that too. Then the DJ played just the right song to open the dance floor, and a smiling Uncle grabbed them by the hand and pulled them out for a quick spin, and then... somebody paid the babysitter 3 hours overtime.

Some things just have a ring of tradition about them. February brings that old weather-predicting ground rodent (who has only been correct about 35% of the time, by the way), March is the official start of Spring, April brings showers, May brings flowers, etc. Here in California, these events have been somewhat askew the last few weeks! Winter has lingered, and showers have persisted. Let's hope that April finally brings that beautiful spring weather we've all been waiting for!

As you can see from my previous post, I'm setting up in the streets of downtown Walnut Creek in a few days, along with scores of exceptional autos, and nice weather would sure be appreciated for that!

Coming up right after that, the town of Danville kicks off their season of outdoor events with the Spring Fling on April 7. This is a Thursday evening, where shoppers and restaurant-goers are encouraged to stay out a bit later and enjoy the products and services that local businesses have to offer. Spring Fling is actually going to occur over more than one date, and is being produced in conjunction with the Danville Area Sustainable Business Council - just in time for Earth Day! "Autos on the Ave" event in downtown Walnut Creek

In the first of a couple of "preview" events leading up to the main event in July, Mogulaire Concours d'Elegance is sponsoring "Autos on the Ave" on April 2. This display of exceptional automobiles will be happening from 10 am until 2 pm on Locust Street in Walnut Creek. Reunions and Expos and Weddings, oh my!

I'm looking forward to bringing the music for the upcoming Class Reunion at Crow Canyon Country Club, being sponsored by the Class of 1975 from San Ramon Valley High School. Although this is being billed as the 35th year reunion, the class of '75 is opening up the invitation to anyone who graduated from SRVHS during the 70s! I absolutely LOVE the music from that era - you could hear almost anything on Top-40 radio back then, from Disco to Country to Hard Rock, and all shades of Pop in between. Instrumentals were huge then, too, from Dueling Banjos to Frankenstein to Star Wars. This is going to be fun!

A few days later, I'll be at the entrance to the Blackhawk Auto Museum for the Business Expo, Food & Wine Event being put on by the Danville Area Chamber of Commerce. There's a "Pirate" theme for this one, so amongst the regular slate of fun songs I'll playing, expect to hear an occasional piratey/calypso/steel drum tune thrown in. "Hot Summer Nights" car show in downtown Danville

One of Danville's last big events of the summer is happening this coming Thursday, August 26. I just confirmed today with the "Discover Danville Association" that I'll be setting up near the Cottage Jewel, which is near the intersection of Hartz and Prospect. There will be a concierge / info booth there.

I'm planning on playing a little bit of everything from the 50s up through the mid-70s, and I'd love to hear what your favorites are from that era! Come on by anytime between 4 pm and 9 pm, introduce yourself and make a request. If you bring a camera, your picture might just end up here on this blog!

Imagine having a jukebox like this at every special event you went to. Imagine that it was loaded with all your favorite music, and that for each type of event, it was loaded with just the right music that was appropriate for that occasion. Or, that your iPod had HUGE speakers, and was regularly updated in real time with fresh playlists.

Now imagine that instead of the bulky jukebox, there was a live DJ there, taking instant requests and pulling songs from every decade of recorded music, with the songs thumping out through big 15" sub-woofers. The colored lights you see are swirling away on the dance floor, rather than just on the jukebox.

So, hiring a DJ is sorta like having your own jukebox. And it's kind of like having a self-updating iPod. But better.

So, as I'm finishing my equipment set-up at the July 4 pool party, a lady asked me if I had any music from the 40's. I told her I wouldn't be worth my salt if I didn't! She seemed both pleased and surprised that I would actually have what my banner/logo promised.

In fact, my advertising tag line, "the RIGHT music for ANY occasion", is something I really try to keep true. If you're having a polka, square dance or karaoke night, truthfully, you'll have to call someone else. But say for instance, a school event or project calls for a review of the 20th century, with each decade represented (including musically). I've got music for that.

Let's say you're planning a family night or banquet or themed event, and want to create the atmosphere of a French bistro or island cabana, or Irish pub or Las Vegas casino. I've got music for that. Perhaps you're planning a Hollywood or "Oscars" party, or an "American Graffiti" sock hop or a cowboy-themed barn dance? I've got music for those, too. Hours and hours of it.

So think outside the box. When planning your event, also think of the music, and give me a call.

Summer Serenade, Downtown Danville, July 15

Assuming the Town of Danville has no problems with it, I've been invited to set up in front of Mountain Mike's Pizza (at the north end of Hartz Ave) prior to the 4th of July parade. I'll either be at their main entrance or under the tall tree at the southwest corner of their building.

Expect to hear a booming mix (explosive? firey?) of patriotic tunes, summery songs, and popular favorites, between 9 am and 11 am, and probably again following the parade's conclusion. If you've got your family's favorite spot reserved, walk on over and say hello!

Events open to the General Public

Most events that I or any other DJ do for a living are typically private or corporate functions, not accessible to anyone but invitees. However, I have 3 events coming up in the next few weeks that offer a rare opportunity to catch me "in the act", for free, in the great outdoors.

First up, on April 15, is a huge T.E.A. rally at the Pleasanton fairgrounds. I've never been a part of anything like this, so I don't quite know what to expect. One of the entertainers lined up that afternoon is Brian Bergondy (aka "The Conservative Kid"), a rapper/singer with a conservative message. For one of his raps, Brian wanted a DJ backing him up with some beats, so he contacted me out of the blue. I'll tentatively be joining Brian during his 15 minutes up on stage; the rest of the time, we'll be set up alongside lots of other vendors in a 10x10 booth. Brian has been gracious enough to allow me to set up there with an entertaining music mix (and gently push my business, of course!) of patriotic and pop songs, roughly between 2pm and 7pm.

A couple of weeks later, I'll be set up somewhere at CPC (Community Presbyterian Church) in Danville on the evening of Friday May 7. There's going to be a free concert there that evening featuring Jadon Lavik, and prior to the concert, an open-air BBQ. A similar event occurred last year with a different musical artist, with proceeds raised going toward summer camp scholarships (if I remember correctly). I'm tentatively going to be playing a tasty mix of music during the pre-show BBQ this year (late afternoon/early evening).

The following day, May 8, I'm tentatively scheduled to be playing music at the 34th annual "Jewelry, Fine Art and Craft Show" in the Alamo Plaza next to Yellow Wood Coffee and Tea. Each year on Mother's Day weekend, this festival draws 65+ artisans to Alamo - a really delightful location. I'm planning on being set up at Yellow Wood from about 10am until 2pm.

The past couple of days, I've been listening some of the hundreds of songs I have that pertain to Summer ~ yes, I'm already thinking ahead to pool parties, neighborhood barbecues, outdoor receptions, etc.

And those don't necessarily include the hundreds of songs pertaining to cars and driving ~ which, in the case of something like "GTO" by Ronnie and the Daytonas, could go either way. Maybe I'll see you at Danville's "Hot Summer Nights".

And I also have nearly 5 hours' worth of music appropriate for a patriotic gathering (e.g., Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4th... tea party, anyone?). So, you start accumulating your party supplies and making your plans; I've already got the soundtrack for your Summer events!

As a case in point, take the fundraiser for Alamo Elementary School from yesterday evening. As I was playing background and dinner music, the auctioneer approached me just prior to the live auction, and suggested that I play snippets of music going into each auction item ~ songs that were either somehow related to that item, or were just going to help in getting the crowd's excitement level up.

So, in a pinch, here's a sampling of what I came up with on the fly. (And, yes, items 409, 410, 411, 416 and 418 got their own music, too.)

Whew! I'm not so sure there's any "not busy" time of year! Having said that, however, I've had enough of a lull in activities during the past week or so that I've been able to get some back-burner projects tended to.

Specifically, I've been rounding up all of the holiday music in my collection and gathering it under one "roof" in my laptop (I should say "roofs", since each holiday is getting it's own umbrella). The "Genius" feature in i-Tunes has been helpful, as have been the copious notes I've kept over the years. Now I can finally get rid of those scattered papers! Songs pertaining to St. Patrick's Day and Easter took no time at all to organize, but some of the major holidays took awhile longer.

What this means is that I finally have to look in only one place to see all of the music I have which pertains to a given holiday - for example, the 3 Christmas songs from the "Love Actually" soundtrack or the 1 Christmas song by Queen or The Eagles are all together now, ready for quick reference and play-ability at the next event.

So far, I've completed Halloween (a bit after the fact, but I've discovered I have plenty of music for more than 4 hours with no repeats!), Christmas (well over 300 songs!) and New Year's Eve (alot more than you'd expect, especially when you dust off old Timbuk 3 hits!). When I get my next scheduling lull, I'll do the same for patriotic and Summer songs.

Just did another wedding reception yesterday; this one was held at "Bosco's Bones and Brew" in Sunol. Second floor. Ouch. Had I known about that ahead of time, I might have asked for a larger stipend. As it was, I should have at least allowed for more time to go up and down those stairs, because I wasn't able to set up my lights! Oh well.

Bosco's was named in honor of a dog back in the 80s who made his way onto the local ballot for Mayor of Sunol, and actually got quite a few votes! Those wacky small town folk.

Now our thoughts can turn to the holiday season. I've got a case of CDs devoted solely to Christmas and New Year's Eve music, and not all of it is the stuff you'll hear at "the other guy's" holiday party (i.e., Jingle Bell Rock...). Specifically, I've got a sweet opening right now for the evening of Friday, December 18. Somebody help me fill it!

What a blast! The 80s music was as big as the hair! The birthday girl in Alamo was turning 40, and seemingly invited all of her high school friends, plus the neighbors out to celebrate. Not sure why so many critics revile this era (maybe it was more for the fashion than for the music?), but the guests and I sure had fun with the "late 70s-to-mid 90s" songs I had cranked last night (plus a request for "Shout", and a few current dance faves).

I played as much as time would allow, from A-ha to ZZ Top, and most of the greatest hits in-between. What are you waiting for? I'm still the best entertainment deal in town. Give me a call today!

October 10 events

Success! Saturday's "Boutique Blitz" went really well, with hundreds (if not 1000+) shoppers attending. If you weren't there, you missed an opportunity to get clothing and merchandise at tremendously reduced prices from 10 different small retailers. The music I provided was a hit as well!

Later on Saturday, I set up all over again for Kathryn and David's engagement party in Alamo. What a lovely back yard it was - it even had its own elevated putting green! For this event, I was given the unusual musical perameters of "classic rock, hair bands and current hip-hop, but NO oldies, bubble gum or rap". Hmmm. Aside from a touch of Van Halen, Cinderella and Greg Kihn, I mostly stayed with mid-tempo urban jamz and hip-hop up until dancing began after dinner.

Boutique Blitz!

Most of the gigs I do are private events, so it's nice occasionally to let you know about something I'll be a part of that the general public can participate in. The "Wine and Music" festival of a few weeks ago was a good example.

Well, coming up in a couple of weeks, I'll be providing the music for "Boutique Blitz" at the Veterans' Hall in Danville. Several of the small shop owners along Prospect Ave. and the surrounding community are getting together for one day only, to offer huge discounts on their specialty and designer merchandise! One of the main organizers for this event is Todd Weinberg, owner of the Edge Shop For Men in Danville.

Stop on by between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm and take advantage of the great deals you're going to find (maybe start some Christmas shopping!), and listen to some good music!

The "Music and Wine Festival" in Alamo this past Saturday went well - my son took some pictures of the event. Thanks also to Yellow Wood Coffee and Tea for letting me set up there. We had gotten some rare late summer showers that morning - in fact, I was awakened pretty early by lightning and some thunder. With that fresh in my mind, I started my setlist with "I Can See Clearly Now", "Here Comes The Sun" and "Pocketful Of Sunshine", followed by 4 hours of a great music mix.

There's still a few openings for Fall 2009 events - Oktoberfest, anyone? Halloween party? For any event that could be enhanced by having just the right music, give me a call!

Music Festival in Alamo, CA

I'll be set up at the 27th annual Music and Wine Festival this Saturday (Sept. 12) in Alamo Plaza. This event is fondly referred to by locals as the Alamo Block Party. After you finish your shopping at Safeway, come over to see me at Yellow Wood Coffee and Tea between 2 pm and 6 pm. Lots of other activities will be happening in the vicinity as well, including a rock wall for the kids. Dinner tickets can be purchased at the Alamo Rotary website. Proceeds go toward supporting local schools. So stop by and say hello!

Weddings

I just recently completed back-to-back weddings on the same weekend, which is admittedly not that unusual, but these were just a few hours apart. The first was up at the Heirloom Inn, in Ione, CA (gold country). It's an 1800's-era home that's been turned into a B&B/wedding site. Quite picturesque! I didn't get to use my full range of lights, however, since previous DJs or bands there have blown a fuse in the old wiring! Oh, well. My friend, singer-songwriter Steve Kritzer, is the uncle of the groom - that's how I got the gig. Steve played and sang beautifully for the outdoor evening ceremony. Following that, all the chairs were moved, and that space was transformed into a dance floor! And for the next couple of hours after dinner, I was taking requests and getting people boogeying! Congratulations, Louis and Robyn!

The next day, I attended my 2nd wedding within 15 hours. Luther and Jana got married in a traditional morning service at Messiah Lutheran Church in Danville (Luther's father was the minister!). It was beautiful. Thanks to church members the Stame's for getting me this gig. After everyone went home for a few hours, some guests returned for an evening reception, which I feel went really well. The bride and groom had picked some great music, and I got to round it out with some fun song choices of my own!

Pool Party and BBQ

You missed it! The annual Diablo West HOA July 4 barbecue was rockin'! Guest ages ranged from 3 to 83, so the music went from Frank Sinatra to Miley Cyrus and everything in between. Patriotic songs, samba, Top 40, country, oldies - and nearly every request was honored! Well, except for maybe that one little girl who kept coming up every 10 minutes... It's one of my favorite gigs of the year, precisely because of the variety. I got a lot of compliments on the great music - hopefully that translates into more gigs!

Capped of the day by taking the kids to see fireworks at San Ramon's Memorial Park. I forgot how cold and windy it gets there in the evening!

Sorry it's been awhile. My most recent event was a wedding reception, quite a distance from home. I originally agreed to do it because my nephew's wife was going to be in the wedding party. Although that status changed over time, I was still hired as the entertainment. The bonus for going was that I'd get to be with my mom and family on Mother's Day!

Too bad I'm not located near there, because I got several compliments - one groomsman even said I was WAY better that the DJ they had at their own wedding. I got a nice tip, which covered the cost of gas there and back. Oh! I also took a few pictures of my rig set-up, which I wanted to post here.

mp3 and iPod weddings

I recently viewed a video online from some unlucky couple's wedding. Oh, the wedding itself was beautiful, and it was beautifully filmed - they apparently got the right florist, videographer, etc., but evidently tried to save money when it came to music and announcements at their reception. Oh, it was painful to watch. Guests were not even staying for things like cake cutting, much less the "dancing" that followed.

As is often the case in society, some things or ideas become trendy with little thought to practical implementation. A few years ago, it was the idea of a "sponsored wedding" that somehow everyone would want to donate their services to you in the hopes of getting business from others. Sounds like a good idea, but never really took off because all the vendors realized that a sponsored wedding only generated more requests for sponsored weddings, not more business for them. So people that overspent on some items, counting on the reception being paid for by others, soon were in trouble as their budget was gone and they were still missing major parts of their event program.

Today, the trendy topic is DIY receptions - using an iPod and a rented sound system instead of a professional wedding entertainer, the DJ. This idea is fraught with peril, because a great event is more than simply gear and music. It is the talent that a qualified professional brings to the event that matters most. It is what allows for a smooth flow to the event, with no embarrassing surprises. A professional DJ provides you with confidence that your event will flow smoothly and will be an event that you, your family and guests will never forget, instead of one they would like to.

This past weekend I provided the music for a wedding reception at the recently rebuilt/remodeled Community Center at Oak Hill Park in Danville. It's always a pleasure to be there, with the stream, the pond, the willow trees, and all of the ducks and geese. As usual, I delivered great music for drinks, dinner and dancing. Upcoming, I'm scheduled to be the DJ for a 30th reunion of Northgate High School in Walnut Creek. The event is being held at Boundary Oak Golf Course. Classic rock and disco. Long live 1978!

Hot Summer Nights in Danville!

Last Thursday evening was the final "Hot Summer Nights" car show in Danville for the year. I was set up in front of Mountain Mike's Pizza, playing good-time rock and roll music from the 1950s and 1960s. Since the cars/owners were all registering just north of where I was (at the high school), I got to see each entry as they paraded down the street in front of me. Lots of "thumbs up" and positive feedback from the drivers as they passed!

The general public crowds really started to swell a couple hours into the afternoon/evening, and stayed busy right up to the end. There were alot of short songs during that era, and I think I nearly got through my entire 100-150 songs during the 5 hours I was there! Of course, I played a bunch of Elvis, Beatles and Beach Boys, but also most of the other tip-top best of upbeat oldies hits that just don't get heard much anymore.

Several passersby took my business card; one gentleman said that this was the first year that he's heard the "right" music at this event. That simply validates what I've been saying myself: When the music matters...The RIGHT music for ANY occasion...

It's that post-wedding, post-graduation time of the year again. And aside from this blog, my only real advertising has been the yellow pages ad. I thought I'd try to kick-start things a bit by offering my services for free at a couple of events (one of which didn't work out).

Toward the end of June, "Auto Affair" (an auto accessories retailer for owners of Ferrari's, etc.) sponsored an "exotic and performance auto show" here in Danville. On one end of the parking lot, a live band was set up near the American Classic cars (Mustangs, etc.), and on the other end (with the European models), I was set up playing a combination of techno instrumentals, classic rock and adult/latin pop. One of the owners insisted that the music on his laptop was best suited for the clientele (James Blunt, Andrea Bocelli, etc.), so I wired it into my system for the first hour. After awhile, however, people started complaining that his music was boring, and I began doing my own thing, to rave reviews. A few business cards were taken, and so far, one inquiry has come in. Sadly, I had to turn it down, since I already had another gig for that date.

Danville turned 150 this year, while also celebrating the 50th anniversary of it's fabled July 4 parade. "Hay Days" was resurrected for the occasion, and I thought I'd try to piggy-back onto some of the festivities by setting up at Trader Joe's (for free!). Everything was going well until the property management thought the wires, etc., might be a liability, and so they put the kibosh on it.

Undaunted, I proceeded for the second year in a row to provide music for our homeowners' association's annual July 4 BBQ at the pool/clubhouse. I taped down the electrical cords and set up the heavy equipment prior to the parade, then left early to finish setting up before noon. By all accounts, things went great! Except for one 7-year-0ld's request for some song about a Frog, I was able to play every request. With a combination of patriotic tunes, top 40, oldies and kids' favorites, it was a success! The kids were dancing, people were smiling, and I got paid!

You want to hire a DJ, but you don't want the "wrong" music at your event.

Neither do I. Afraid that if you hire a DJ, you'll hear lyrics that are inappropriate for certain ears (like the nieces and nephews, plus both grandmothers)? Today, even the bleeped, or "radio-edited" versions of songs often contain lewd or suggestive elements. Who needs a moral dilemma like that when you're trying to plan a big party?

It's a new year! Lots of important events will probably happen this year - life's milestones. Is one or more of these events in your future?

Wedding - Anniversary - Retirement - Graduation - Birthday - Reunion

Is your family, church youth group, neighborhood or place of business planning a party? Virtually any occasion, in any location (as long as there's electricity), would be enhanced with the addition of music!

Think of it - a holiday gathering, fashion show, banquet, classic car show, grand opening, fundraiser, barbecue or picnic - wouldn't that event have so much more energy and fun if there were a live DJ present, taking your guests' requests? Encouraging folks to dance (or spend more money at an auction, or get the little ones involved with The Bunny Hop, etc., etc.)?
